Fulbright Scholarship is a program initiated by Senator J. William Fulbright in 1945 for the promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science. Fulbright Scholarship eligibility requirement

Eligible countries for Fulbright foreign program

Proof of English language proficiency
Most of the host institutions are in the different cities in the United States and will require that the applicant provide a proof of English proficiency test such as TOEFL and IELTS.
Nevertheless, the program has now extended to more than 50 countries and supports the instruction of over 30 languages at host schools across the U.S. Hence, any course that the instruction is not in English will not require a proof of English proficiency.
Also, countries that are native speakers of English may not require a proof of English proficiency for the Fulbright scholarship.
The applicant is to provide a transcript from a recognized and accredited university in your country. Depending on the program, the applicant will be require to provide the Bachelor’s, Master’s degree or Doctorate degree as applicable.

Ineligibility for Fulbright scholarship
Individuals in the following category are not allowed to apply for the Fulbright scholarship.
- The candidate should not be a U.S. Department of State employee.
- or an immediate family member of a U.S. Department of State employee.
- an employee of an agency under contract to the U.S. Department of State to perform services related to exchange programs
Fulbright Scholarship Funding
Program funding is provided by the U.S. Congress through an annual appropriation to the U.S. Department of State. Foreign governments, colleges and universities and private foundations also provide direct and indirect support.
The scholarship is full funded and covers the cost of the following;
- Living stipend and
- Health insurance

The date for fulbright scholarship application differs per country, however, most countries usually start receiving applications from February to May annually of the preceding year you wish to study.

The requirement for application varies and is a subject to the host institution. However, i will advice the foreign student to start early and gather the following documents.
- A valid International passport
- Transcript and certificates from the institution attended.
- At least 3 current recommendation letters
- Motivational letter
- Proof that you will return to home country after study E.g Employment certificate from home country
- Recognized proof of English Proficiency Test
- State of Grant purpose (if applicable)
